Monument Valley & Canyon de Chelly
MAGNIFICENT VISTAS ~ MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES ~
NAVAJO TRADITIONS & CULTURE

Day 1 - Travel through the scenic Tonto Nataional Forest north. A stop is made at the historic Hubbell Trading Post. For more than a century, this fascinating post has been a social and commercial oasis. The huge stone and adobe hacienda, complete with barns, corrals, warehouses and residence, has changed little since 1876. Check into the Holiday Inn Chinle. The hotel is a part of the historic Garcia's Trading Post. The evening is unscheduled.

Day 2Canyon de Chelly National Park. Spend time at the Visitors Center, followed by a drive along the rim with plenty of photo stops. Nowhere in Navajoland is the blend of past tradition and present culture more evident than Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The Navajo people still have a mystical bond to this redstone canyon that cuts an almost tropical path of trees and flowers through the desert. Canyon de Chelly is home to several periods of Indian culture dating from 350 A.D. to 1300 A.D., and the 26-mile canyon's sheer cliffs range from 30 to more than 1,000 feet, providing a spetacular backdrop for hundreds of Anasazi ruins, as well as modern Navajo homes and farms. The visitor's center offers details about all of the canyon's many world-famous sites, including Spider Rock, White House Ruins and Canyon del Muerto.

Awesome views continue to be today's highlight. Tour Canyon de Chelly via a private jeep tour with expert commentary from the Navajo driver guide. Travel through the canyon is restricted, and allowed only with an authorized guide. Learn about Southwestern Indian history from the earliest Anaszai basketmakers to the Navajo Indians who live and farm here today. View ruins of Indian villages built between 350 and 1300 AD at the base of sheer red cliffs and in canyon wall caves. Marvel at spectacular rock imagery.  The scenic route leads to Gouldings Lodge, the accommodations for this evening. Enjoy spectacular views of Monument Valley just outside the lodge, and visit the Trading Post Museum. The museum is both a showcase of varied artifacts and a glimpse into a bygone era. Goulding’s Lodge is not just a famous locale for Old West movies, but is also steeped in a rich history of trading, tourism, and culture. Watch a classic John Wayne western filmed right in the valley. The evening is unscheduled to relax, have dinner and enjoy the ambiance. Gouldings Lodge has a heated indoor swimming pool.

Day 3 - Explore Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park up close and personal with a Navajo guide during your jeep tour in the valley. Experiencing one of the most majestic, and most photographed, points on earth. This great valley boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet, framed by scenic clouds casting shadows that graciously roam the desert floor. The angle of the sun accents these graceful formations, providing scenery that is simply spellbinding. The landscape overwhelms, not just by its beauty but also by its size. The fragile pinnacles of rock are surrounded by miles of mesas and buttes, shrubs, trees and windblown sand, all comprising the magnificent colors of the valley.  Late in the day arrive at the historic Cameron Trading Post and Lodge. Take time to explore the extensive gift shop and admire the antique furnishings.
